      Sadly a problem that is extremely common in political discussions nowadays. Especially with how many people hold multiple, contradictory positions at once.

    So... (for example) if it's 12 noon in D.C. July 1st, then, at the same time... (carry the 2...) it's 1am July 2nd in Tokyo. Meaning, if your flight from Tokyo to D.C. takes 13 hours, (summer) then you'd land, 13 hours later, but the same Tokyo time, +1 hour you took off, which is now 13 hours later there. BTW... Japan hasn't observed DST since the 50s... another Sorkin mistake.

    It's interesting that two of Sorkin's lead characters had fathers that abused them. Jed Bartlet and Will McAvoy 🤔. Either Sorkin projecting or he has tropes he goes to. Either way, I liked Adam Arkin as a recurring character in TWW.

    I know that it has become a tradition to send off the former president on the big main plane used as Airforce One, but it seems really ridiculous. You could offer a dignified send off and some real luxury with one of the smaller planes used for various high level officials. You simply don't have nearly as much staff, press, delegates and such travelling with you on this little flight. Security, comfort and some nice perks can be provided with the much smaller planes. I think Obama did it for the optics when he left and he was just going on a vacation before returning to his new private residence in D.C.

How interesting to see the development of his character here four years later, with no reservations whatsoever about asking the not yet even announced nominee to sign as Chief Justice. Talk about growth and progress. What an example for all to follow.

    1:16 President Lincoln did not "free the slaves." The Emancipation Proclamation declared slaves to be free only in those states under Confederate control. It didn't affect slavery in the North. Contrary to popular belief, Lincoln's primary motivation wasn't to free the slaves but to win the Civil War and reunite the Republic.

    I remember a time when I respected the Supreme Court as a body. I may have not agreed with individual Justice's interpretations and rulings, but I respected the concept of the "Checks and Balances" of the three individual governing branches in the US Government, and how the Supreme Court represented a (for the most part) unbiased check of the Legislative and Executive branches. The current SCOTUS is, however, corrupt to the core. And there's no mechanism in place to correct that corruption. This episode of the West Wing only serves to embody a rosey-colored glasses vision of what could be, what should be, and what isn't.

    That was such a beautiful ending for the Bartlet administration. I imagine all Presidents have similar thoughts on going home after their time ends. Your whole life changes in a day. As President Bartlet says throughout the series, "What's next?" I miss the West Wing and wish we could have had a few years of the Santos administration.

      The transition process is pretty long. The lame duck period where a president leaving under the restrictions of term limits can be as long as a year. Everyone is posturing and preparing for the next guy. But in any case transition is two months and that's plenty of time to pack your stuff. The domestic agenda is pretty much put to bed. Much of your long time staff has already left. Situations still come up, but anything that requires a long term commitment or ongoing work tends to be deferred to the incoming administration.

    • @MrGruffteddybear
      @MrGruffteddybear Месяц назад

      @@seanwebb605 True, but you are still the President until noon on Inauguration Day. At that time, it all changes.

    • @seanwebb605
      @seanwebb605 Месяц назад

      @@MrGruffteddybear It starts changing much earlier than that. As much as a year when you are leaving due to term limits. Definitely greater influence and ability to impact legislation during transition. And there are aspects of the "'bubble" that remain long after leaving office. For the rest of your life you have a secret service detail that protects but also imposes some limitations. Former presidents like Carter and Clinton made many different foreign trips and spoke to leaders of government, opposition leaders etc. It is quite common for them to be interviewed by U.S. officials on their return home. The post presidency has some of the trappings of the presidency.
